On 29 and 30 October 2026, the German PIPAC Center at the Evangelisches Krankenhaus (EvK) Herne hosted the PIPAC Showcase. Surgeons from Romania and Germany came together to see Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) in routine operating theatre practice, to share clinical experience and to get hands-on with the technique themselves.

Second year, another 15 surgeons from Romania

One focus of the event was the second edition of the PIPAC Clinical Exchange, an educational initiative by Global Med Care Surgical together with REGER Medizintechnik. In 2025, 15 Romanian surgeons had already taken part; this year, another 15 came to Herne. That makes 30 surgeons from Romania in two years who have learned the procedure in Herne.

The goal is to build dedicated PIPAC programmes at Romanian hospitals. Equipment alone is not enough for that. It also takes trained teams, shared experience and reliable clinical partners. One result so far is the first PIPAC at Spitalul Gerota in Bucharest, performed by a team that had previously been trained in Herne.

Thursday: opening evening

The programme began on Thursday evening in a small group. After an overview of PIPAC treatment and REGER technology, from the injector to the Complete Service Package, there was plenty of time over dinner for questions and first conversations between the teams.

Friday: live from the operating theatre

Friday belonged to the operating theatre. Over the course of the day, Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Zieren, co-developer of the PIPAC procedure, performed several PIPAC procedures. The operations were streamed live to the seminar room and explained step by step: from patient selection and access to the assessment of the peritoneum and the application of the chemotherapy aerosol.

Between the live transmissions, participants moved on to the hands-on session. On the simulator, they were able to operate injector nozzles and injectors themselves and retrace the steps they had just seen in the operating theatre. Switching between watching and doing is the core idea of the Showcase.

Host and partners

The event was hosted by Prof. Dr. med. Chris Braumann, Director of the Department of General, Visceral and Tumour Surgery at the Evangelische Krankenhäuser Herne and Gelsenkirchen. Our thanks go to Global Med Care Surgical for organising the Clinical Exchange and for its long-term commitment to new PIPAC centres in Romania, and to REGER Medizintechnik, the original developer of PIPAC technology, for the close cooperation.

Above all, we would like to thank all participants for their open questions, the discussions and the collegial exchange. For patients with peritoneal cancer (peritoneal carcinomatosis), every new trained team means easier access to PIPAC, a therapy that is generally well tolerated and can be given alongside systemic chemotherapy.

What comes next

The next in-depth training course with simulator training and a user certificate will take place as part of the REGER PIPAC Workshop in March 2027. Hospitals that would like to introduce or expand PIPAC therapy are welcome to contact us via our contact form or by email at info@deutsches-pipac-zentrum.de.
