Together with our partner Global Med Care, we supported the first PIPAC therapy at the Spitalul de Urgență „Prof. Dr. Dimitrie Gerota“ in Bucharest. Patients in Romania now have one more hospital where PIPAC is available.
PIPAC in Romania
Over the past years, PIPAC (Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy) has become a treatment option for patients with peritoneal metastases (peritoneal carcinomatosis). Introducing it safely at a new hospital takes an experienced centre, a trained local team and partners on site who work closely together.
With the first procedure at Spitalul Gerota in Bucharest, patients in the Romanian capital can now receive this minimally invasive treatment, performed according to the international standard.
What is PIPAC therapy?
In PIPAC (Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy), a chemotherapy drug is delivered into the abdominal cavity as a fine mist during a minimally invasive procedure. The pressure helps the drug penetrate the tumour tissue, at a much lower dose than in systemic chemotherapy.
The team and our partners
We thank our colleagues on site, especially Prof. Dr. Adrian Bartoș and his team, for the good cooperation and for the trust they placed in us.
We would also like to thank our partner Global Med Care, which helped introduce PIPAC at Spitalul Gerota. New PIPAC programmes need this kind of cooperation between clinicians, trainers and local partners if they are to last.
“Every new site where PIPAC is introduced with assured quality means better access to an effective therapy for patients there. We warmly congratulate Prof. Dr. Bartoș and his team on the first PIPAC at Spitalul Gerota and look forward to continuing our cooperation in Romania.” Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Zieren, German PIPAC Center
Why careful introduction matters
PIPAC is technically demanding. Pressure, aerosolisation, safety standards and patient management all have to be right for the treatment to work as intended and to be safe.
We therefore do not just train new centres once. We stay involved:
- theory on indications, patient selection and how PIPAC works
- practical support during the first procedures on site
- technical support together with experienced partners
- case reviews and discussion of clinical scenarios
- continued advice after the PIPAC programme has started
An international network
PIPAC centres in different countries stay in contact, share their experience and work towards making the method more widely available. Spitalul Gerota is now part of this network.
We will continue to support new centres and treatment teams in Romania so that more patients there can be treated close to home.
Do you have questions about PIPAC therapy or international cooperation?
At the German PIPAC Center, we advise patients as well as medical colleagues. Whether your question is about treatment options for peritoneal cancer or about setting up a new PIPAC programme, Prof. Dr. Zieren and his team will answer it personally.
